Lawton, OK – Lawton Public Schools is pleased to announce that Character.org, a national advocate and leader for character, named MacArthur High School (MHS) a 2018 Oklahoma School of Character. The program recognized MHS on January 30th as a school that has demonstrated its use of character development to drive a positive impact on academics, student behavior and school climate.
\r\nThis honor comes only two years after students and staff began working on character education initiatives. Students and staff worked together to create the school’s touchstone – On Me, Myself. Everything I Do – and core values - Motivation, Attitude, and Character (MAC).
\r\n“This honor means recognition for the faculty, the staff and the students,” said Laura Puccino, assistant principal. “I am happy that this school receives the honors that it deserves because so many people work so hard and for so many hours to ensure the success of all students.”
\r\nThe school received two Promising Practices in Character Education – a nationally recognized award from Character.org – last year for the following programs: The MAC Football Program and Relay for Life: Passport to Hope.
\r\n“The goal is to give students opportunities to help serve in the community and to help build values important to them,” said Puccino.
\r\nSince its inception, Character.org has recognized more than 565 schools with the distinction of State School of Character. Criteria for the designation are based on Character.org’s 11 Principles of Effective Character Education.
\r\nMHS joins Eisenhower High School within the LPS district to receive the distinction and officially implement character education or apply for status designations. The Highlanders will be visited in March from additional judges in hopes of becoming recognized as a National School of Character, as well.
\r\n“We welcome the opportunity to continue our efforts to help students become our leaders of tomorrow,” said Puccino.\r\n
